Some years there are a few CDs that stand far above the rest, but that's not the case this year. There are at least 20 excellent releases that could have been in the top two or three. After much anguish, repeated listens to the top contenders, and many drafts, these are the 50 CDs that I think were the best heavy metal releases of 2007.

1. Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works (Relapse)

As the '90s came to a close, heavy metal was in pretty good shape. 1999 saw the release of some really good albums, and the continued success of up and coming bands like Opeth and In Flames coupled with the ongoing popularity of veteran bands made the future of the genre look bright. One troubling thing about the end of the '90s was the rise of rap metal and groups like Limp Bizkit, but their reign would be short. Here are my choices for the best heavy metal albums released in 1999.

1998 was a big year for traditional and power metal. Many of the artists in that year's top 10 fall into those genres. There were a couple more extreme acts that made the list as well, such as Death. Here are my choices for the best heavy metal CDs released in 1998.

1. Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding

The Chemical Wedding was Bruce Dickinson's last solo album before rejoining Iron Maiden, (he released another while a band member in 2005) and also his best. Dickinson has one of the great ...

After 1996 was average, the following year saw some really good metal albums released. 1997 was a difficult year to select the top 10 releases. For the second time this decade Emperor topped the list, and groups like In Flames, Gamma Ray and Stratovarius made return appearances. Here are my choices for the best heavy metal albums released in 1997.

1995 was a pretty good year for heavy metal. My list of the best of the year includes a wide variety of artists in genres like melodic death metal, death metal, power metal and others. There's also a wide geographic representation, from Sweden to Germany to Norway to the U.S. Here are my choices for the best heavy metal albums released in 1995.

Symbolic continued Death's string of excellent releases, even with the continual lineup changes. For this album guitarist Andy ...

1994 was a really good year for heavy metal. It saw the rise of Norwegian black metal along with the continued success of American groups like Pantera and Megadeth. The Norwegians have a strong presence on this year's list, including the top three spots. CDs that just missed making the list include Cradle Of Filth, Enslaved and Slayer. Here's my choice for the best heavy metal releases of 1994.

1993 was another year where there weren't many mind-blowing all time great metal CDs, but there were a bunch of really good, solid releases. The benefit of doing these lists so many years later is that enough years have elapsed to judge which albums have stood the test of time, and 1993 was a good year for that. It was a really strong year for extreme metal, with groups like Death, Carcass and Entombed making the list along with more commercial bands like Anthrax and Type O Negative.

Some years it's a tough call figuring out what the best album of the year is. In 1992 it wasn't even close. Pantera was head and shoulders above the rest of the field. As grunge continued its dominance on the sales charts, radio and MTV, 1992 wasn't a spectacular year for heavy metal. There were some good releases, but in terms of depth of quality it wasn't one of the best years. Here are my choices for the best heavy metal albums released in 1992.

1991 was a watershed year for metal. On one hand, Skid Row became the first metal band to debut at number one on the Billboard album charts. On the downside, a new genre called grunge emerged with releases from Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in 1991. That genre would kill the hair bands and do serious damage to all metal bands. But heavy metal still did fine with monstrous commercial success from Metallica. A lot of more extreme bands like Sepultura, Death and Morbid Angel made my year end ...

The '90s were a turbulent decade for heavy metal. It saw the death of the hair bands, the rise of grunge and the short-lived popularity of nu-metal. The underground scene thrived throughout the decade, and there were some fantastic releases by big-name bands as well. Here are my choices for the top 20 heavy metal albums released in the 1990s.

1. Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990)

Megadeth's fourth album is a thrash masterpiece. Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman's riffs are outstanding, and ...
